Allison Taverner, "Ally" to her friends, runs a small grocery/convenience store named "Taverner's Market" in downtown Tandy. Ally was once human but has been a centaur, half human and half horse, for the past three or four months (in Wotch-universe time). Her boyfriend, Joe, has gotten used to her being a centaur, but he is still trying to find a way to change her back.
Ally grew up in Tandy, living with her parents above their store. She went off to college, got her bachelor's degree in Small Business Administration, and came back to Tandy to help run the family store. Her parents promptly retired and left for Florida, leaving her in charge.
But little did she realize that [spoiler...]Taverner's Market rests atop a transdimensional nexus that connects the Wotch universe to otherSpace, an alternate universe where humans don't exist. Normally such nexuses are harmless, but since Ally's family has owned the store for generations, she has been in close proximity to it most of her life. Because of this, the nexus has subtly altered her molecular structure in ways that were not immediately apparent. When the Mythos Virus spread through Tandy in Myths and Legends, the nexus's cumulative effects on Ally caused the Virus to affect her differently than it did most people, transforming her into what would be considered a mythological creature in otherSpace: a human. Thus, the Mythos Virus did not seem to have any effect on her at all.
However, when Anne sent the cure raining upon the town, the cure had a rather unexpected effect on Ally. Just like the Virus, the cure affected her the way it would in otherSpace, transforming her into the form she would take there: a centaur.
Shortly after this, Ally was visited by Miranda West, who attempted to make her human again, but found herself unable to do so. Miranda surmised that the cure has also locked Ally permanently in centaur form, such that she can never be made human again. Miranda then cast an "ignoring spell" on her that would prevent anyone except Anne from noticing that she is a centaur unless someone points it out to them. She then advised Ally to tell Anne about all this if they should ever meet.
Ally was initially horrified upon learning of her equine fate, but over time she seems to have coped with it well. By the time Ally eventually did meet Anne, Robin, and Jason in Consequences, it was implied that she may not even want to be human anymore. She currently runs the shop, hoping her boyfriend will grow to accept her change.
[...hide spoiler][edit] Trivia
- Ally was originally a fan-character designed by Phantom Inker, a character whom Anne liked enough to include as a canon character in the Wotch.
