Blackbeak is a penguin pirate whose first appearance was in the War Stories arc. The bird is currently a member of the Resistance under the leadership of General Tigerclaw, having previously served under Commander Haus. Blackbeak wears a red and white bandana. The penguin lost the tip of the right wing and has since had it replaced with a classic pirate hook. Contrary to the bird's name Blackbeak's beak is yellow.

Despite having wings Blackbeak is capable of holding a sword and is a fearsome swordsbird. The bird uses a rapier often to great effect, defeating a giant worm with help from DeFrain and bringing down a Uricarn in single combat. It has been hinted by Drax that Blackbeak may not be such a good shot.

Blackbeak is a long time companion to DeFrain, having both served with Commander Haus and then joined up with the Resistance. The two often fight as pair. Blackbeak doesn't like to be touched by people – he threatened Theodore with his hook after the young sorcerer patted the penguin's head. It is actually unclear whether Blackbeak is a cock or hen as the penguin has never been referred to as "he" or "she". While Blackbeak understands at least one other language, the bird is either incapable or unwilling to speak anything other than the native tongue of penguins. This seems to work since others appear to comprehend what Blackbeak is talking about. Wawk!
